In the highland region of Panama's Westernmost province of Chiriqui lies Boquete - the placid and wonderful "Valley of the Flowers and Eternal Spring". Boquete has a surface area of 514 kilometers (308 square miles) and a population of approximately 16,000 in the District of Boquete, about 500 of whom are expats from the United States, Canada and Europe and who live in Boquete at least a portion of the year. The town's elevation is approximately 1,000 meters (3200 feet) above sea level, accounting for an average temperature of 20 degrees Centigrade (68 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the year, while the surrounding area varies from 800 to 3000 meters in the northern region and to 300 to 800 meters in the southern region. The highlands are primarily of volcanic origin; the lower elevations are of colluvial and sedimentary origin. Its highest peaks are Volcan Baru, Cerro Palo Alto, Pianista, India Vieja and Estrella.
Boquete's distance from Panama City is 480 kms (300 miles) and from David, Panama's third-largest city, about 40 kms (24 miles) or about a 40 minute drive by car. A flight from Panama City's Marcos Gelabert Airport to David takes about 50 minutes with several daily flights with two different airlines available. Bus transportation From Panama City to David is also available and takes from 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 hours.
The Caldera River, whose headwalls form in the central mountains of Chiriqui Province at 2,900 meters (8700 feet) above sea level, is the main river of the district. Running through Boquete in a north-to-south direction, its waters flow into the Chiriqui River and into the currents of the India Vieja and the Valles Rivers and the streams of Jaramillo, Aserrio and Grande.
The cultivation of flowers, coffee, citrus fruits, strawberries and a variety of vegetables is the main source of work for the people of Boquete. The rich volcanic soil is perfect for farming, earning the area the title of "Breadbasket of Panama." The major coffee-producing area in Panama, comprising approximately 50,000 acres of plants, Boquete's coffee quality is the best in the Republic and is rapidly gaining recognition as among the best in the world. On the steep mountains surrounding Boquete live a large number of indigenous people of Panama called Ngobe-Bugle or Guaymi Indians who, dressed in their colorful clothing and picking coffee, fruit and vegetables, present a lovely picture during harvest time.
Boquete was founded on April 11, 1911, its first settlers coming from other districts of Panama as well as from Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Sweden, Germany and North America. The older farms and homes of the area maintain remnants of architectural styles reminiscent of these countries.
Unique to the area are winds from the North producing a weather phenomenon called "bajareque", which is a very light, intermittent drizzle accompanied by a cool breeze making rainbows a common sight, especially throughout the summer months. Double rainbows are frequent.
